Choosing an Osteopathic Manual Practitioner

As a pre-requisite, the Canadian College of Osteopathy (CCO) accepts only students who already have a licence, registration or certificate in the health care field, such as physiotherapists, chiropractors, massage therapists, athletic therapists, and nurses. These students already have an active practice. With each new course that the student attends, they are able to integrate the osteopathic philosophy, theory, methodology and techniques into their current practice. After taking the first course, the student of Osteopathy is already able to begin practising Osteopathy. With each advancing level of participation in the program, the student is able to incorporate more Osteopathy into his practice.

The graduate Osteopathic Manual Practitioner from the CCO, integrates all the elements of Osteopathy into his practice, while still incorporating his previous training, such as exercise prescription, nutritional counselling and life-style management. It is for that reason that graduates of the CCO are some of the most qualified practitioners of manual therapy in the country.

A provincial association called the Ontario Association of Osteopathic Manual Practitioners (OAO) has been established by students and graduates of the Canadian College of Osteopathy. Members of the (OAO) have received extensive education and clinical training from educational institutions that meet or exceed the Benchmarks for Training in Osteopathy standards, as published by the World Health Organization.

At present, Osteopathy is not a regulated health profession, although the OAO is currently working on a submission to the government for regulation. There are various other schools claiming to teach the Osteopathy, with far less rigorous standards of education. It is extremely important that members of the public do their due diligence when seeking an Osteopathic Manual Practitioner. Graduates of the Canadian College of Osteopathy have spent 5 years of combined classroom study and student clinic work, as well as final research thesis.
